CRF tables a district courts bill
The Front wants judicial appointments devolved to the district benches; the government calls it a constitutional overreach.
The Civic Renewal Front has tabled a bill devolving the appointment of district judges to the district benches, ending the Chancellory’s role in selecting the lower courts.
Vesna Horvatin, the party’s leader, said the present system let the government screen candidates for political reliability. “A judge appointed in Sinj answers to Sinj,” she said. The bill leaves the High Court of Cassation and the Constitutional Court untouched.
The government called the measure a constitutional overreach, arguing that the 1921 settlement assigns judicial appointment to the Chancellory. The bill has been sent to the constitutional committee, where the Front expects it to be held.
