Piero's Perch: the Assembly canteen raises the price of the State Loaf
The subsidised loaf is now forty delin, and the crumbs are extra.
The Assembly canteen has raised the price of the State Loaf to forty delin, citing the harvest, the exchange rate, the weather, and the general reluctance of anyone to be blamed for anything.
I have eaten the State Loaf. It is not a loaf so much as a policy with a crust. The National Grain Trust assures the Republic that the grain is wholesome, the yeast is patriotic, and the price is stable, all of which are true in the sense that the word “stable” can be bent to mean “higher.”
Ari Stov told the chamber the government “understands the pressure on household budgets.” The Blue Dawn benches nodded. The loaf did not comment, being a loaf.
