Cetingrad council votes to sue Vokamet over Red Shore

The Foundry District wants the lake cleaned at the parent company's expense.

The Cetingrad council voted 24 to 17 on Tuesday to fund a civil action against Vokamet and its parent Maj Holdings over the iron-oxide discharge that stained the city’s lakefront, known locally as Red Shore.

The motion, tabled by the northern bloc, asks the District VIII court to order a clean-up of the affected shoreline and to establish a fund for the treatment of respiratory illness in the Foundry District. It revives the claim behind the 2011–2012 Northfocus documentary series, which named Vokamet as the dumping operator and Maj Holdings as the directing parent, and which Vokamet sued to suppress.

The mayor’s office said it would study the vote before deciding whether to join the action. Robert Lujek, elected as a Maj-aligned independent, has previously used municipal police against protests along the shore and has left discharge politics largely untouched.
