The Court Circular and the truth about Red Water

The Herald prints the Chancellory's timetable and calls it the Sinj Standard. The north keeps a different record, and it is written in water samples.

The Kresimirian Herald led this week with the Chancellory’s schedule and a photograph of a ribbon. That is the paper of record doing what it has always done, and it is not a scandal. It is simply not a record.

The record of the north is kept elsewhere. It is in the sampling books of the Bistrica water board, the clinical returns of the Cetingrad Foundry District, and the engineering reports a company would rather have left in a drawer. When SeverMin calls the Shaft 9 spill a “Red Flood,” it is counting on the Sinj papers to print the phrase and move on. For eight years, most of them have.

The Red Water case was won and then reduced, and the villages are still on tankered water in dry summers. The lesson of 1998 was not that the law failed. It was that the law is slow, and water is not. We will keep the samples.
