Harvest yields in Pologradska up four per cent on last year

The district grain board credits a wet spring, and warns that storage is close to full.

Grain yields in Pologradska are running about four per cent above last year, the district grain board said, after a wet spring and a dry August.

The board expects the surplus to move west under the annual contract with the National Grain Trust, which buys much of the eastern crop. Its silos are reported to be within a tenth of capacity, and the board has asked the trust to bring forward two shipments.

The board’s chairman said the extra grain would ease the winter price for flour, but that Polograd had nowhere to store a further good year without new capacity.
